Traditional Vs Laser Welding: Processes, Advantages And Typical Applications.

Welding is a manufacturing process that uses heat to join two or more separate parts together. Industry professionals currently use both traditional arc-based welding, spot welding and laser welding methods in their operations.

Both process variations offer unique characteristics that make them suitable for different situations. For example, conventional welding is adapted to less precise workpiece assembly, while laser welding offers faster processing speeds and lower risk of thermal distortion.

The following article summarises the differences between conventional welding and laser welding services, including an overview of their processes, key advantages and typical applications.

Traditional welding processes

Several traditional welding methods are still in use today, including

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. This method of arc welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode to heat the workpiece and melt the filler (if present) to produce the weld.

Metal inert gas (MIG) welding. This method of arc welding uses a consumable wire assembly (used as both electrode and filler material) to produce a weld seam.

Spot welding. This method of welding uses a pair of electrodes to clamp the work pieces together and pass current between them to create a weld seam.

Laser welding processes

The heat required for welding is provided by a tightly focused beam of light as small as two thousandths of an inch in diameter. Welding is carried out by firing a series of short pulses which melt the metal to produce a high quality weld. Depending on the particular welding task, filler material may be required, as in TIG welding. Due to the tightly focused laser beam, heat input is minimised and the part can be processed almost immediately.

Laser welding advantages

Weld strength - The weld strength is really better than TIG and MIG welding because the laser weld is very narrow and has an excellent depth to width ratio.

Heated area - the heated area of the weld does not spread to the rest of the material and, due to the rapid cooling, the material can be handled almost immediately after the job is completed.

Metals - Laser welding can be used to weld a wide range of metals such as carbon steel, high strength steel, stainless steel, titanium, aluminium and precious metals.

Precision laser welding offers a more precise weld than TIG and MIG welding. With an accuracy of 0.025 mm, you will find it difficult to match such precise welds. Laser welders also do not require the skills required for conventional welding. Laser welding works via computer input, whereas conventional welding requires someone to operate the machine.

Deformation - due to the laser welding process, there is minimal deformation and shrinkage of the material.

One side - laser welding can replace spot welding (which requires contact with both sides of the material) as it only requires contact with one side.

Scrap - Laser welding produces less scrap due to its high precision, as there are hardly any errors.

Laser welding - the field of work

Due to its unique properties, laser welding can be used in many different industries.

Precision parts - due to the high precision of laser welding, it can be used for precision parts, an area where conventional welding often fails. Laser welding also helps to reduce stress in the material because of its low heat output.

Medical devices - The laser welding head does not come into contact with the material, helping to keep the surface clean and hygienic.

Aesthetics - Laser welding creates a pleasing appearance, ideal for welding in the public eye.

Jewellery and highly valuable materials - precision and minimal heat output mean that laser welding is ideal for processing highly valuable materials.

Increased productivity through laser welding

Laser welding can solve many engineering problems, especially for parts that are sensitive to the effects of excessive heat input, are prone to distortion or require extremely precise welding.
